What is Art?

There are as many definitions of what Art is or is not as there are artists. I think art is anything that you create for your own appreciation. Art is the manifestation of human creative skill and imagination in a visual form, with scent , as sound or in digital form. Art cannot always be defined. Painting, sculpture, drawing, structures, light shows, music, dance and other works meant to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power are art forms.

Abstract Art uses a visual language of shape, form, colour and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world. Western art had been, from the Renaissance up to the middle of the 19th century, underpinned by the logic of perspective and an attempt to reproduce an illusion of visible reality. The arts of cultures other than the European had become accessible and showed alternative ways of describing visual experience to the artist. By the end of the 19th-century, many artists felt a need to create a new kind of art which would encompass the fundamental changes taking place in technology, science and philosophy. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.” – W. C. Fields “Bring in the bottled lightning, a clean tumbler, and a corkscrew.” – Charles Dickens “Always carry a corkscrew and the wine shall provide itself.” – Basil Bunting “Paris’s neighborhoods, the arrondissements, are organized like a twist. They spiral from the river like toilet water flushing in reverse and erupting out of the bowl – a corkscrew or what have you, a flattened pig’s tail, a whorling braid notched one to 20.” – Rosecrans Baldwin Descriptive Keywords: Challenging, Abstract, Warm, Red, Yellow, Artistic, Mysterious, Background, Playful, Creative

Abstract Art relates to or denotes art that does not attempt to represent external reality, but rather seeks to achieve its effect using shapes, colours, and textures. Abstract Photo by Marc Korf Resolution: 3365×2243 pixels (7.5 MP) Print size: 11.2″ x 7.5″@300 dpi Size: 3.41 Mb ID: 220757 Published by Dreamstime Stock Photos What abstract artists say: “What goes on in abstract art is the proclaiming of aesthetic principles. It is in our own time that we have become aware of pure aesthetic considerations. Art never can be imitation.” – Hans Hofmann “I paint; I draw and paint – I’ve been doing that since I was in third grade, drawing realistically and then changing to abstract art. That was my first creative thing before guitar or comedy.” – Steven Wright “I’m not an abstract artist; I leave that to others. To me, abstract art ended with Kazimir Malevich’s ‘Black Square.’ To continue it is senseless.” – Jonas Mekas “I think we’re much smarter than we were. Everybody knows that abstract art can be art, and most people know that they may not like it, even if they understand there’s another purpose to it.” – Roy Lichtenstein Descriptive Keywords: Challenging, Abstract, Warm, Red, Yellow, Artistic, Mysterious, Background, Playful, Creative

The dislocations and ambiguities, in cubism and abstract art as well as the surrealists, reminded me of my childhood in Shanghai.” – J. G. Ballard “We are all hungry and thirsty for concrete images.
